In the commercial world an increasing number of projects are being
undertaken by consortia of companies who come together for the lifetime
of a contract and then break up on successful completion of the work.
Such examples of collaborative working are called Virtual Organisations
(VOs) in the computer science and Grid communities.
In the animation industry it is commonplace to tender and be awarded large projects
assuming that all necessary organisation and infrastructure are in place. It
is then a frenzied race with time that follows, in an attempt to
quickly form a Virtual Organisation able to deliver. In addition to exerting
overwhelming pressure, the practice may lead to less than optimal
selection of partners, process and infrastructure.
EPCC undertook a study of best practice in the
construction and management of VO in a commercial Grid context. The
report identifies what is required to establish a VO for the
project, what software exists and what is missing. Insight is gained
from Computer-Generated Animation and Software Development VOs.
