PGPGrid WP 2: Capture of sequences using existing software

The 3D-Matic lab liaised with Pepper's Ghost to provide studio time on their 3D scanner to capture human actors whose motion was used to drive animators' models. Initially these sequences were used to test the tools and techniques being developed in WP 3 with the final aim of capturing a sequence that can be used to demonstrate the validity of this approach to generating animation.

An animation showing four stages in our 3D animation production pipeline. The stages are (top-left to bottom-right):

  • The capture data from our 3D scanner.
  • The important facial landmarks tracked in the above sequence.
  • The mesh that results from conforming a generic mesh to the capture data using the landmarks as constraints and then applying a high frequency filter to the trajectory of vertices.
  • A smoothed animation generated by importing the conformed mesh into 3D Studio Max®.
